Broneirion is a Grade II listed Victorian residence built by industrialist David Davies in his home village, Llandinam in Powys. An idyllic setting looking across the Severn, it remained home for his family until the Second World War. During the war it acted as the safe haven for Gordonstoun School and following this became the Training Centre for Girlguiding in Wales. After many years on lease, Girlguiding Cymru was offered the opportunity to acquire the building, lodge and summerhouse in the early 1990s and after frantic activity throughout Wales was able to buy it on behalf of all guiding in 1993. The House is therefore of historical importance to Wales and guiding and it was not without some trepidation that it was agreed that the time had come to tackle some of the issues and upgrade its facilities to offer its guides and the wider community an experience to remember!

One of the first tasks was to upgrade the electrical infrastructure throughout the House. The aim was to improve with the minimum of disruption, fitting around the ongoing requirements of a busy training and meeting programme. Improvements were to include upgrading and wireless activation of lights; ample power and internet points; and future proofing to allow further enhancement and expansion. A number of local electrical installers were approached for quotations and after careful consideration Alan Thomas Electrical Contractors was selected. Alan and his team came across as professional electricians who were also conscious of the additional responsibility that comes with tackling such a large and complicated project.

Having won the contract, Alan and his team did indeed work in partnership with us. Often staying on site and working around us, they proved to be exceptional both in competency and attitude to their work – we couldn’t have been in safer hands!

Broneirion

Alan worked from 'morn 'til night' (literally) every day of the week then tidied up so that we could operate our business during the weekend. He designed different features to ensure the character of the building was not compromised. He just loved the building and the work he was doing. He and his team were always polite and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. With the new technology he worked with the manufacturer to make sure things worked effectively for us. He also worked with us to ensure the systems we put in were cost effective. When we had a very difficult electrical technological issue not relating to his work - he dropped everything and helped us out.

Just to express our huge thanks for your and your team's excellent work on totally re-wiring Llandrinio Hall from top to bottom. It's fabulous to have everything working (which is a novelty), and it was a total pleasure having you all around. Especially appreciated is your sympathy for and deft handling of the structure of this ancient building, your team's ability to access everywhere with minimal disruption, your capacity for working around a fully-functioning family with least disturbance, your adept skills in resolving problems with unflustered ease, and for your autonomous creation of solutions to obvious issues. We also thank you for your recommendations, suggestions and guidance throughout what was a significant undertaking, for your timeliness, the efficiency and speed of your work, and your fair price.

Jonathan Willis, Llandrinio Hall

I write in connection with the work carried out at my home last February which involved checking the wiring of the entire house and making various additions and alterations.

I have been very happy with the finished result - your suggestions for certain improvements have been very successful. I must compliment you on the way you carried out the work with so little disruption to myself and the clever way you were able to add additional power points etc. without involving the need for any re-decoration.

You came promptly at the time specified and left everything in a clean and tidy state. You and your assistant were polite, considerate and helpful at all times. The print-outs which I subsequently received were clear and helpful and very professionally produced.

Last, but not least, everything was completed within the budget specified!

Many thanks
